A Stress-Free Guide to Preparing Kids for Family Photos
Family photos are meant to capture your family exactly as you are — the love, the connection, and the little personalities that make your kids them. But every parent knows… photos with kids can feel a little chaotic.
The good news? With a few simple tips, your session can be relaxed, fun, and full of genuine moments you’ll treasure forever.
Here’s exactly how to prepare your kids for a smooth and successful family session!
1. Talk About the Session Ahead of Time
Kids do better when they know what to expect.
Tell them you’re going to meet a friend who’s going to take pictures while everyone plays, snuggles, and explores.
Keep it fun, not formal.
Avoid things like: “You better behave,” “You need to smile,” or “Don’t mess up your outfit.”
That creates pressure — and pressure = crankiness.
Instead try:
- “We’re going to play outside and have fun!”
- “She might ask you to run or tickle Mom!”
- “It’s like an adventure!"
2. Make Sure They’re Fed + Rested
This alone solves 90% of session meltdowns.
Feed your kids before the session and bring small, mess-free snacks:
- Fruit snacks
- Mini marshmallows
- Goldfish
- Puffs
Avoid chocolate or anything that stains.
If they nap, schedule the session after nap time — not before.
3. Dress Them in Comfortable, Weather-Appropriate Clothing
If kids are itchy, cold, hot, or wearing something stiff… it will show in the photos.
Choose:
✔ Soft fabrics
✔ Clothing they can move in
✔ Layers if it’s chilly
✔ No shoes that hurt
✔ A backup outfit in the car (just in case)
And don’t forget: matchy-matchy isn’t necessary — complementary colors always look better.
4. Bring Comfort Items for Young Kids
Think:
- A favorite small toy
- A cozy blanket
- A pacifier
- A stuffed animal
We can use them for warm-up time and tuck them away once kids are feeling comfortable.
And if your child wants to hold a little toy during a few photos? It’s honestly super cute and real.
5. Let Them Be Themselves
One of the biggest mistakes parents make is trying to control the entire session.
Let them wiggle.
Let them explore.
Let them warm up on their own timeline.
I work with kids all the time — I know how to guide, redirect, and encourage genuine smiles without forcing them.
Real moments photograph beautifully.
6. Keep the Energy Positive
Kids feed off your energy more than anything else.
Avoid:
✘ Constant correcting
✘ “Smile! Do it right!”
✘ Complaining about their behavior
Instead try:
✔ Laughing with them
✔ Praising them
✔ Being playful
✔ Letting things go
The more relaxed you are, the better the photos turn out.
7. Reward After the Session
Whether it’s ice cream, the park, or a family movie night — give them something to look forward to!
This helps them associate photos with fun, not stress.
8. Trust the Process
Every family session has its chaotic moments — that’s normal and expected.
I promise I’m capturing beautiful moments the entire time.
Your job: love on your kids.
My job: make the magic happen.
